My name is Garrick McFadden and I am running for the United States House of Representatives, in Arizona’s Sixth Congressional District.
As an attorney, I advocate on behalf of my clients every day to obtain justice for them and their families. Through that work and as the owner of a small business, I have learned that though we live in the greatest country in the world, injustice still persists. I am running for office because I want to deliver real solutions to the complex problems that Arizona and our country face. I will work for and embrace economic development, health care reform through a single payer system, reforms to our criminal justice system and immigration policies, investments into public education, and as the son of an Air Force veteran, ensure the much needed support for each man and woman that fights for our country.
My parents moved to Arizona in the 1940s and met at Arizona State University where they were both education majors. They were the first in their families to not only attend college, but also to graduate and receive their degrees. My parents experienced the transformative power of public education as a mechanism to lift a generation out of poverty. Their love of learning was instilled in both me and my brother at a very young age.
After high school, that love inspired me to leave my hometown of Apple Valley, Minnesota to attend Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. I knew no one when I arrived. At BVU, I was selected, by the administration and faculty, to interview Nobel Peace Prize winner F.W. de Klerk. He told me how lawyers and activists were responsible for ending Apartheid. After that, I knew I could be a voice for the voiceless and I plotted my path to law school.
I enrolled at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, where I was a Legion Lex Scholar, and had the privilege of having Erwin Chemerinsky as a professor. His reverence for the United States Constitution was infectious. He taught me that as attorneys we are the protectors of the Constitution. That it is our duty to guard it from all enemies, foreign or domestic. When I was sworn in to both the Arizona and California Bar, I took those oaths as a solemn and awesome responsibility that I continue to uphold daily.
I earned my Masters in Business Taxation from USC’s Leventhal School of Accounting. I utilized this knowledge to help small business and internet start-ups reach their potential. My previous law firm, Gilman/McFadden, LLP, represented one of the internet companies that was fundamental in the creation of Silicon Beach. I plan to use that knowledge to create a Silicon Oasis in the Sixth District, so we can retain our top talent and create an oasis of well-paying 21st century jobs.
Arizona is home to me and my wife Erica, a director of a governmental agency, and our four year-old daughter Pepper.
